A Second Chance

As Temi Lateef reflects on his teenage years, he acknowledges how his interest in bikes was overshadowed by other distractions. However, life took an unexpected turn, leading him down a troubled path that eventually led to prison. Yet, this setback didn’t define him. Upon his release, Temi had a clear vision and founded “My Choice,” an organisation dedicated to supporting marginalised young people in London and Lagos, Nigeria.

5 Tips for getting back into cycling

  1. Start with Short Rides: If you’re new to cycling or getting back into it after a while, begin with short rides to build confidence and gradually increase your distance. Explore your neighbourhood or local park before venturing further afield. Find your perfect bike, with our easy-to-use Bike Finder Tool.
  2. Choose the Right Bike: Ensure you have the right bike for your needs and comfort. Visit a local bike shop for expert advice on finding the perfect fit and style. A well-fitted bike can enhance your cycling experience and reduce the risk of discomfort or injuries.
  3. Gear Up: Prioritise safety by wearing a properly fitted helmet and appropriate cycling attire. Opt for bright and reflective clothing to enhance your visibility to other road users. Don’t forget to equip your bike with front and rear lights for improved visibility, especially when cycling in low-light conditions. If there is one thing to do this – Daytime Running Lights
  4. Plan Your Route: Before setting off, plan your route to include cycle-friendly paths, lanes, or quieter roads. Familiarise yourself with local cycling infrastructure and consider using cycling apps or maps to find safe and picturesque routes in your area.
  5. Ride With Others: Cycling with friends, family, or local cycling groups can be motivating and provide you with an additional level of safety. Riding in a group increases visibility and offers mutual support and encouragement. Plus, it’s a great way to socialise and make cycling more enjoyable.

Temi Lateef’s remarkable journey from adversity to empowerment is a testament to the transformative power of cycling. It serves as a reminder that by embracing our passions, staying motivated, and believing in ourselves, we can unlock a world of possibilities. So, grab your bike, invite your loved ones, and embark on your own adventure. Let the pedals turn, the wind guide you, and the joy of riding inspire you to create lasting memories and positively impact your life and community.
